Land A DevOps Job
Land A DevOps Job is a book to help job candidates put their best foot forward. Having participated in hundreds of interviews, I was finding that my fellow engineers were having a hard time articulating their experience and skills in a meaningful way. At my current employer, we use a rigorous process to remove unconscious bias and subjective analysis, replacing it with data collection and objective measurements. But if the candidate still fails to articulate their experience, there is nothing the process can do to help them. This gap in the interviewing process is why Land A DevOps Job exists.
83% of candidates that attach a cover letter to their job application with details about relevant skill experience get a first round phone interview. 79% of employers say they discard a poorly formatted resume. 91% of employers state that developing a personal connection with the candidate during the interview process is a determining factor for hiring. 63% of interviewers admit to asking narrow questions that do not give the candidate an opportunity to showcase their talents. 87% of candidates admit to applying to jobs that don’t match their skills. 71% of candidates admit to “blind applying” to job postings. This data means that candidates search for jobs longer than they should, don’t get into roles that are a good fit, get paid less than they are worth, and end up resigning or being unhappy in those roles.
Whether you are actively searching or just wanting to stay relevant in your current role, this book will teach you how to build a strong social media profile that brings the opportunities to you, expand your open source contributions to showcase your coding skills, enhance your CV and tailor it for job submissions, and write cover letters to bring attention to your job submission. It also includes a listing of the most asked for technologies and skills with specific bullets about what to know about each, social training exercises to control the interview conversation to your favor, and premium DevOps education content to demonstrate your deep knowledge and experience during your interviews.
Over the past 20 years, I have built my skills as a computer engineer doing everything from designing high performance computing clusters to programming gene sequencing machines to developing software to deploying and managing enterprise cloud infrastructure. As a businessman, I have launched three technology companies, been a co-founder of a biotech startup, and been a co-founder of a blockchain event ticketing company. I am passionate about technology, but even more passionate about sharing my experiences to help others realize their own dreams and aspirations.
As of this writing, I am a Principal DevOps Architect at the largest cloud provider on the planet. That means I work directly with C-level executives at Fortune 50 companies to help them plan and deliver DevOps transformation strategies. I help them acquire talent on a regular basis through direct interviewing, developing interview questionnaires, developing coding exercises, and building recruiter training programs. This experience has given me a unique perspective into what kind of skills companies desire. It also means that I directly influence the DevOps community through my contributions to community blog posts, official company website content, and Gitlab code repositories, to name a few. I live and breathe DevOps on a daily basis, practicing it at a strategic executive level all the way down to individual contributor efforts, such as code development.
This book collects the priceless information I have been exposed to in the DevOps industry and organizes it in an easily digestible format with specific action plans for you to follow. The prescriptive guidance in this book will help get you into a high quality job that pays an average of 23% higher than the median salary range in half the time it takes most people to land a mediocre job.
